Paleo Chocolate Chip Bakies

Print Friendly

Do these taste like what your mama used to make? No. Are they soft and chewy or thin and crispy? Nope. Are they delicious, cheap and easy to make? Abso-freakin-lutely. They’re not cookies, but cookie-like, so we’re gonna go with “bakies.” This is pretty much the cheapest and quickest way to make a Paleo cookie–I mean bakie. Why? It’s a throw together recipe with very small quantities of the expensive stuff (almond flour, almond butter) and no eggs. Maybe your eggs aren’t expensive, but my eggs, straight from the farm, are $3.50/dozen; I really hate recipes that call for like 5 eggs at a time. Now that I think about it, these are actually…Vegan, cringe.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 c almond flour
  • 2 small bananas, about 1 c*
  • 1/4 c dark chocolate chips
  • 3 T almond butter
  • 2 T brown sugar or coconut sugar, optional
  • 2 t vanilla extract
  • 1 t baking soda
  • pinch of salt

Method

In a mixer, mix the following ingredients together until smooth: bananas, almond butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, salt and baking soda. Add the almond flour and chocolate chips.

Bake at 350ºF for about 11 minutes. As you can see from the picture, I used a 1 1/2 inch ice cream scoop to form the cookies. Use a spoon if you gotta, but if the cookie dough “ball” is larger than an inch and a half, you’re going to need to adjust the baking time. These bakies do stick a bit to the pan, so use gentle force to remove them–or try lightly greasing with baking sheet.

*Your bananas MUST have brown spots on them! When I say 2 small bananas, I mean: when you roughly tear the bananas into a measuring cup, you get about one cup, do not puree the banana and then measure.

I agree with Sanders about them tasting like banana bread with chocolate chips, which is something I really enjoy! If you want something with a little sweet they’re much better than alternatives I might have turned to in the past. Thanks so much for coming up with this and keep them coming. Any chance there’s such a thing as a paleo shortbread cookie?

i definitely think it’s possible, but it wouldn’t be an exact replica. problem is flour and butter together make wonderful things like pie dough and crumbly cookies like shortbread, haven’t really found a good alternative yet, but we’ll never stop trying.

Whoa mama! I’ve made two batches of these in the last 3 days. Fantastic! I’m thinking of subbing the chocolate chips for walnuts and adding some cinnamon and nutmeg next batch. Best paleo-ish cookie I’ve ever eaten!!!

just a tip, when my bananas start going too ripe and i know i cant possibly eat them, i remove them from the skin, lay them on a piece of plastic wrap, slice them into pieces but leaving in the form of the whole banana, then roll them up in plastic and freeze them. Great for making quick shakes because they are frozen, can be thawed to use in baking or other hot concoctions I can come up with for a dessert!!

we do that too! minus the slicing part–which is a great idea!

I never leave comments, but these cookies were so good I had to comment on them! I did make some substitutions because I cannot have chocolate and almond butter is way too expensive right now. Instead of chocolate I used cranberries and instead of almond butter I used sunflower butter. The only thing about baking with sunflower butter is it turns green when baked! I also added walnuts. Just like everyone else said they tasted like banana nut bread. And to respond to an earlier comment: you can have coconut sugar on the paleo diet, in moderation of course. But for those of us worried about blood sugar, coconut sugar is way better than cane sugar and the nuts should help to offset spikes. FYI Thanks for the great recipe.

I’m so glad my mom buys two bunches of bananas, one for use during the week that is almost to the point of being cooking only and one that is still slightly green. ^^

That way, we have bananas we can cook with and by the time we get through one bunch, the other is ready to be both eaten and cooked with.

I saw this recipe just last night and had tomake them right away. I am so glad that I did. I did substitute the brown sugar for sucanat with success. I am more of a “harder” cookie person than soft, but these were mighty tasty right out of the oven. I put the ones that “survived” into the freezer and ate one a few minutes ago. YUMMO! The boys are clamoring for more and I am doing everything to keep my own hands out of the freezer. While they are cold to the touch, eating them frozen gives them that more cookie-like texture. These are without doubt a keeper in my book. Now I cannot wait to try other items from your site.

Do you know if ground almonds are the same as almond flour?

hi carrie. the texture of homemade ground almonds won’t be as fine in texture as almond flour. but technically, ground almonds and almond flour are the same thing…but not. i hope that helped. hahaha.

First of all, I love these things! I always bake them when I need that extra bit of sweetness in my day (which is a lot lol). A tasty variation for the holidays is to use a full cup of pumpkin puree instead of the bananas with 1.5 tsp of pumpkin pie spice keeping all the other ingredients the same. The pumpkin flavor tastes pretty awesome with the dark chocolate. I have also used unsweetened applesauce instead of bananas in a pinch when I’m out and they still come out good, although I love the banana flavor.

Not sure why you called this Paleo, should just be called chocolate chip bakies.
